AQUÍ Y ALLÁ / HERE AND THERE
1999. Video installation
Double rear projection. Continous play. No audio.
Variable dimensions
Here and There belongs to the series Hello/Good Bye, which is based on the fact that westerners use the same gesture of waving a hand to say hello and/or goodbye. Thus, it is necessary to be aware of the situation to know that this gesture means one thing or its opposite depending on the case.
It is an installation consisting on two silent video projections in slow motion, in black & white. The top screen shows people waving hello and/or goodbye from a boat. The bottom screen shows another group of people doing the exact same thing from the shore, in a harbor. The way the video is made allows to make believe that time goes on slowly and that nothing else is going on in these two screens. However, if the viewers stay for a while and manage to see the details on both images, they will notice that, from time to time, the image of one of the persons vanishes from the boat and then appears on the shore, while someone on the shore will vanish and appear later on the boat. And they all will keep on doing the same gesture. After a 2-hour loop, every character in the piece has been on both points.
